AC Cobra, sold in the US as the Shelby Cobra and AC Shelby Cobra, is a British-American sportscar with a V8 engine. The Cobra is produced in both the UK and the US since 1962.
Like many British manufacturers, AC Cars had been using Bristol straight-6 engine in its small-volume production, including its AC Ace two-seater roadster. In 1961 Bristol decided to cease production of its engine.
In September 1961, American retired race car driver and automotive designer Carroll Shelby wrote to AC asking if they would build him a car modified to accept a V8 engine.
Since the Bristol engine production had ceased they agreed to do so. Shelby asked Corvette if they could provide the engine, but they said no. Did not want any competition to the Corvette. So Shelby turned to Ford and got the engines he asked for.
Now AC Cars have success with using Corvette engines and Tremec transmissions in their 2021 Cobras. The new Cobra is just perfect. The best of old and new World in the Car industry.
